Forest Kindergarten & FUN IN THE FOREST

We are so thrilled to announce our new FOREST KINDERGARTEN for 2017! This is going to be an amazing nature-based program for 4 to 6-year-olds. These learners will have a 4-hour program that combines the benefits of outdoor nature play, highly noted academic curriculum and plenty of time for creative child-led discoveries.
The forest kindergarten movement has been thriving in Europe for the last three decades and has recently taken root in the United States. Both nature preschools and forest kindergartens have a uniquely different approach to curriculum than conventional indoor early childhood programs.
“The goal of nature-based programming is to get kids outside while simultaneously teaching them how to think critically, count and experiment with the scientific method”, says Laura Mammarelli, director of the Blue Heron School at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, which is a Montessori Nature Preschool in Holderness.
Just like our preschool program here at Chesterbrook, our Kindergarten curriculum will focus on the natural rhythm of this world, the social and emotional development of each child and helping children take risks and improve their self-help skills and independence.
Additionally, our children will be learning about basic survival skills, life skills, fire-making, knife skills, cooking over an open fire, meal-time etiquette and building resilience as they learn to adapt to varying weather and temperature conditions throughout the school year.
Of course, we won’t be sacrificing academics. We want it all! Our children will be learning handwriting efficiency with Handwriting Without Tears. Our Fountas & Pinnell phonics lessons will provide scientific information about the complex, intricate relationships between letters and sounds and the ways in which they work to support developing readers.
What makes this Waldkindergarten, or Forest Kindergarten, different from a traditional program? Well, we hope our nature-based program helps your child make life-long, meaningful connections to nature and understand their place in this natural world.
We hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey as the only nature-based Forest Kindergarten in our area. We have 12 spots available for 2017 and would love to see your family participate!

In Fall 2017 Chesterbrook School of Natural Learning will be hosting an afternoon program for children ages 4 to 6. Sandown & Chester does not yet have Public Full Day Kindergarten. We’d like to offer a morning and afternoon program for those public Kindergartners or for families that are looking for an extended outdoor setting.
Our afternoon will have all the benefits of a nature-based program with loosely structured activities focusing on discovery, problem-solving, science process skills, and creative natural experiences.
Children will be participating in outdoor play that reinforces gross motor skills, motor planning, cause & effect and other life skills activities with connections to cooking, measurement, mathematics, journaling, story writing, story-telling, literacy, artistic discovery, and much more.
Children can join the afternoon program anywhere from 2-5 days per week. We will start our session by eating lunch together, followed by independent exploration time, community circle, a Growing Up WILD lesson and substantial outdoor time to connect and engage with nature.
